April is National Volunteer Month, and one non-profit that is near and dear to us is The Greater Cleveland Food Bank!  In this wonderful month of promoting volunteerism, let’s explore a bit about one of our local and far-reaching food banks.

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank is a nonprofit organization that serves food in the Greater Cleveland area in Ohio.  It has become one of the largest food banks in the country, distributing millions of pounds of food annually to those in need.

The mission of the Cleveland Food Bank is to alleviate hunger in the community by providing food and support to those who are struggling to make ends meet.  They work with over 1,000 partner agencies, such as food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and after-school programs.

Donating to this important regional organization is simple, effective, and will make an enormous difference in the fight against hunger!

Some ways you can donate are:

  1. Monetary donation - Through their website, The Greater Cleveland Food Bank accepts donations of any size.  Every dollar donated will go to help provide meals today to those in need.  Per the Cleveland Food Bank, just $1 can provide 3 (three) meals to families in need!
  1. Host a food drive - Consider hosting a food drive in the workplace, your school, place of worship, or in your neighborhood.  Oftentimes, high school children need to record volunteer hours for government or other related classes at school, and this is a fantastic and straightforward way to accomplish this goal.  The food bank will accept non-perishable food donations, and they provide guidance on how to organize a successful drive.
  1. Attend a fundraising event - The Greater Cleveland Food Bank hosts several fundraisers throughout the year, including their annual Harvest for Hunger campaign.  Attend one of these events and consider sponsoring a table to support their mission.

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank plays a critical role in addressing food insecurity in Northeast Ohio. Through its many programs and partnerships, the organization is working to ensure that everyone in the region has access to nutritious food. By supporting the Cleveland Food Bank, you can make a difference in the lives of those in need in your community.

Take advantage of National Volunteer Month this April and earn your Help A Food Bank or Volunteer at a Food Bank Grandparent Merit Badges. Grandparent Merit Badges urges you to involve the young children in your life in your donation efforts (as much as possible based on age restrictions). By including the young ones in your volunteer and donation efforts, you will help generate awareness and help to instill a sense of giving that will benefit your communities for a lifetime! Whatever method of donation you pick, your contribution is going to make a difference!  Thank you!
