Snowy days don’t have to be all about the children. Grandparents can get in on the fun as well, and the grandchildren will love it! Here are some easy ways to have a good time in the snow with the little ones.
Build a Snowman Together
Building a snowman is an easy and fun activity to do when it snows. If the snow is the right condition, which is moist but firm, this is a perfect snow day activity. The snowman needs three different round balls of snow, the biggest on the bottom, and smaller balls going up. To build a snowman, start by rolling a small snowball-sized ball of snow with your hands. Then, put it on the ground and start rolling it in order to pick up more snow. Once it’s a decent size, move it carefully to where you’d like your snowman. Next, start rolling the next ball. Be careful, part of the fun can be in the balancing of the balls on top of each other! When you have all three balls you can decorate your snowman. Add a hat, scarf, a carrot nose, rocks for a nose or mouth, sticks for arms, etc. One of the most enjoyable parts is capturing a photo of your favorite grandchild next to their snowy work of art!
Sledding
While sledding is usually a fun time for the children, you might take part in the fun too if you have a small, safe, or gentle slope in your yard that you could use with the kids. When looking for a hill to sled down, make sure it’s not too steep and has a long flat area at the bottom so you have room to come to a stop. Make sure the hill does not have any rocks or sticks on the way down. For more safety tips, check out https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/safety-sledding.html.
Remember to laugh at yourself and enjoy it!
Best Shoes for Snow
When outdoors in the snowy and wet weather, safety is important. Coats, gloves, and scarves are all needed to keep out the cold, but to prevent slips and falls, it’s a good idea to find a high-quality pair of snow boots or shoes. When shopping for snow boots or shoes, look for a pair that is warm, water resistant, and non-slip such as these Mishansha winter boots.
You can find many high-quality pairs of snow shoes on Amazon for reasonable prices, but if you don’t want to buy a pair of shoes, you can also purchase non-slip shoe covers for under $20 which are found here.
Build A Fort
If it’s too cold to go outside and play, there are plenty of fun and warm activities to do indoors. All you need is a couple of chairs and blankets. Place the chairs in a square shape around your living room or other open area. Place the blankets over the chairs to form a roof. You can add additional “rooms” with more chairs and blankets. Playing with simple things found around the house is idyllic for aspiring minds. Grab a few favorite short stories and it’s a date!
Hot Chocolate Station
Putting together a DIY hot chocolate station with your grandkids is another tasty indoor activity for a snow day. To put a hot cocoa station together, all you need are a few mugs, hot cocoa, and your favorite toppings. Toppings for hot cocoa can include candy canes, colored sprinkles, chocolate sauce, and don't forget themarshmallows. Here is a link to a DIY hot cocolate station for kids.
As adults, sometimes we tend to see the burden of a snow fall, which may include traffic delays, having a hard time getting to the grocery store and shoveling the driveway. But if you team up with your grandchild and find the fun of the situation, you can create a few wonderful experiences and memories.
