Thank You to Our Veterans!
Honoring and caring for our veterans is such a wonderful part of our year and we need to always remember this tradition as a personal civic duty.

Honoring and caring for our veterans is such a wonderful part of our year and we need to always remember this tradition as a personal civic duty.
Bringing children and grandchildren into this time-honored holiday is equally important. Our children and grandchildren will see to it that legacy has been remembered, that time served is discussed and spoken of, that photographs are shared, that American flags are put out and that our town parade is attended and you can wave to each other and smile with pride for others who have looked after you in a very particular way.
There are so many things to do with grandchildren to honor veterans. Our local towns make it simple and accessible to be a part of celebrations. So, jump in and enjoy this time together. Here are some ideas.
Learn from a Veteran. Who do you know that is a veteran or currently serving? Pay them a visit and listen to them talk. What story have they told? Did they appreciate this special time spent? Listening is such an important skill to have in this life, and a veteran will be filled with gratitude to have the chance to speak with you.

Invite a Veteran to visit your grandchild’s class. Teachers may like this idea very much. Have a veteran visit class to say hello to the children and talk for a few minutes. This is always a wonderful learning opportunity for the students and the veteran. Share history, stories and remember to ask questions!
Play music for the Veterans. I have seen heartwarming stories and videos posted online of music students playing music for veterans as they approached a group or as a welcome to a ceremony. This is a very special way to celebrate a veteran by playing songs for them. If you have grandchildren who are musically inclined, find out a few songs that the veteran loves and play them. A priceless gift!
Write a Thank You Note. This is a Grandparent Merit Badge sticker in the activity book, and it is also a generous act of kindness to write a thank you note. Don’t let this chance pass you by as writing a thank you to a veteran is at the pinnacle of goodwill.

Attend a Veteran’s Day Parade. The holiday parades that celebrate our country’s veterans are almost as much about seeing all the fabulous children waving flags and waving hello as it is the outstanding men and women who have served our country and are taking the precious moments to be recognized. Bring your kids, bring your grandkids, grab a chair, grab a blanket, and get patriotic! Have fun and congratulate your town for putting on a parade for our veterans!
Remember this holiday in a small or big way. But usually, small gestures of kindness will go a long way and make a veteran’s day extra special.
Speaking of celebrating veterans and being patriotic and useful and helpful, this is a wonderful time to mention to you something you never knew you needed to hear today!
